Using Technology

This week the sixth grade Technology Ambassadors visited our classroom to teach us more about coding.  We were introduced to a program called Scratch.  This program is free. Students can practice coding at home simply by visiting the CES links page on our school's website.

Mathematics:  This week we learned more about division, arrays, and fractions. In the partner game below students were racing to fill one whole.

We used this game to compare: 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2

What team work!

In this activity: students were dividing paper granola bars.

We divided large numbers into equal groups.

Reading and Writing Workshop:  We began the week by sharing our "Top Ten Facts Posters".  We created informational posters as part of our informational book clubs.
We learned a lot of interesting facts from each other.

We then began a fairy tale unit.  Within this unit, we will work on point of view, fairy tale elements, fractured fairy tales, cultural fairy tales, and comparing and contrasting texts.
We are exploring fairy tales searching for their elements.

We then rewrote The Three Billy Goats Gruff from the Troll's point of view.

Genius Hour:  Our engineering task this week was to create a bridge for the Three Billy Goats.  The bridge was made out of marshmallows and toothpicks.  The bridge had to span 18 centimeters and hold the weight of the goats.
