Happy Spring

Spring Engineering Projects:  During our Second Grade Genius Hour, students have been designing ways to help the Easter Bunny.  In Mrs. Dusablon's room, the Easter Bunny was tired of hopping.  They designed balloon powered cars.

In my classroom, students designed catapults to help the Easter Bunny deliver chocolate eggs.

Our students enjoy this time to create and discover with their friends in both classrooms.  It is so great to see how the students have learned to persist through these challenging tasks.

Reading Workshop: Students have been exploring book series books this month.  They are working with a partner and reading several books from one series.  The partners meet and discuss similarities and differences within the texts.  They also compare how the characters have changed over time.  Some of the series we are enjoying include: Cam Jansen, A-Z mysteries, The Box Car Children, Flat Stanley and many more!  The students are so passionate to read and share with their partner.

Writing Workshop:  We are currently revising and editing opinion pieces.  The students have written reviews about their favorite places, restaurants, movies, books, and computer games.  Each student has picked one review to publish.  Next week, we will begin making digital slide shows of our work.
We are peer editing our reviews.

Mathematics: In math, we are just finishing up unit five.  We were working on subtraction strategies, money, and place value.  In unit six, we will be diving into geometry, fractions, and using arrays to multiply.
