Happy Fall

Reading Workshop:  This week during reading workshop we worked more on the basic elements of a narrative text.  We read Leaf Trouble and discussed the setting.  We found evidence in the text to prove our thoughts.  We then re-created the setting out of torn paper.

Using Technology to show our Learning:  We used the I-pads to create Popplets about a character from our independent reading books.  We took pictures from our books as evidence.  The students have learned to identify both inside and outside traits for their characters.

Reading with Big Buddies:  On Fridays we enjoy our time reading with our sixth grade buddies.

Mathematics:  We began unit two in Bridges.  This unit will focus on place value through 1,000.  We began by reading Jack in the Beanstalk and counting Jack's magic beans.  We sorted the beans into hundreds, tens, and ones.

Math Workplaces:  We learned two new workplace games this week.  We enjoyed  practicing our math skills with the games: Turn them over and Boo Bump.

We practice Reflex Math.

Genius Hour:  During our Genius Hour the Second Graders were challenged to make a parachute in order to help Jack escape.  The children were given paper, string, wax paper, tissue paper, saran wrap and tin foil to use for their creations.  They really enjoyed testing and improving their parachutes.

We are Engineers!
Inside Recess:  We beat the rainy day blues with fun activities with our friends.  It is so nice to see great friendships forming with classmates.

Learning about Fire Safety:  The Cambridge Fire Department came on October 12th and taught us all about Fire Safety.  The children loved the video, Sparky the fire dog, Rollie the Talking fire truck, and seeing the real fire truck.

Reading and Writing Workshop:  This week we focused on reviewing blends and closed syllable words.  In Reading Workshop, we worked on identifying the problem and solution of a text.  We also learned about Author's Purpose.  Why did the author write the book?  In Writing workshop we wrote letters to the Cambridge Fire Department thanking them for their visit.
