Fun in 2019

Goal Setting:  January seemed like a good time to reset our hopes and dreams.  Each student created new goals for the rest of the school year.  They reflected on their learning so far in order to create one social and one academic goal.  Ask your child what they will be working on.

Social Studies:  This month we learned more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges.  We talked a lot about "peace" and how to solve problems peacefully.  We created and decorated our room with peace signs and peace doves.  This unit fit in nicely with our non-fiction unit as we read and collected facts on each person we studied.  We learned to use more than one source, how to highlight important information, and how to take notes using bullets.

Learning to pull out facts and highlight

Reading a Writing Workshop: We are just finishing up our informational units.  The students and I are now editing their expert books so that we can publish them.  The students feel very proud to have written chapter books complete with a table of Contents, headings, keywords, and a glossary.

In reading workshop, we have just begun a new unit on strengthening our comprehension.  We have begun by learning how to make connections to the text in order to deepen our understanding.  The three types of text connections are listed below:

Mathematics:  In math, we just completed unit three which worked on two digit addition and subtraction using place value and a number line.  We also worked on story problems.
We created story problems for our friends to solve!

This week, we began unit four, which focuses on measurement.  We have learned more about inches, feet, and yards.  In number corner, we continue to work on graphing and fractions.

Science:  We are ending our landform unit by learning about mapping.  The students created landforms out of clay and then mapped the features they created.  All models needed to include four landforms and two waterways.  Maps needed a map key, symbols, and compass rose.  What a fun way to demonstrate our learning of landforms.

Playing a game called: Copy my Map

Genius Hour:  For the past two weeks the children have had engineering tasks that have to do with "fast land changes."  In Ms. Dusablon's room, students created a model of a volcano.  In my room, student's created a structure that could withstand a hurricane.  Very fun!
